NAACP Responds To D-49 MLK Costume Controversy

It's a story that's gotten national attention and sparked outrage: A Falcon School District 49 second-grader dressed as Martin Luther King Jr. for a project and was pulled out of class by the principal for wearing black face paint.

A second grade student at Meridian Ranch Elementary School was told to remove makeup he wore to turn his face black as he dressed up for a project in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The project was a part of the second grade's living wax museum.

Concerned that facial hair, glasses, makeup and piercings might provide easy clues, the researchers only used photos of people who did not have such embellishments. They cropped the grayscale photos so that only faces, not hairstyles, were visible.
